Energy Efficient Homes
From May 2011 all new homes must have a minimum 6 star energy rating. ‘Innovative Steel Buildings’ homes easily meet this standard as we incorporate energy efficient design, building and product measures as standard inclusions into our homes.
Creation of a more energy efficient home is based in the planning and design phase of building. The linked ‘Synergy Energy’ site has an excellent demonstration on how to effectively design an energy efficient home using orientation. We discuss more specific energy efficient options in detail at planning stage, but offer the following general information for your interest:
1. Land choice
The ideal block has a north facing long side.
2. Home design
Plan your home with living areas to the north side and bedrooms to the south if possible.
3. Windows
Size, placement, glazing and type of windows are important. Windows are a source of passive heat, light and cool. Ideally larger windows will be in the living areas north facing, minimal or nil windows on the west, smaller windows to the east and south. Use blockout window coverings where appropriate.
4. Draught proofing
Seal external doors and use sealed exhaust fans within the house.
5. Cladding and roof material
Different cladding and roof materials have different efficiency ratings. Steel roofing has a higher rating than tiles.
6. Heating and cooling
Zone the home through design and use of doors to block off sections to take advantage of passive heating and cooling. Design the home for flow through summer breeze if possible. Ducted heating should be zoned for best efficiency effect.
7. Energy efficient hot water
Solar Hot Water System with gas booster is popular and energy efficient. It predominately uses passive energy water heating. If solar is not possible an Instantaneous Gas Hot Water System heats only water as it’s used rather than heating and storing.
8. Lighting
New homes have a lighting allowance of 5 watts per internal living square metre. In the planning phase of your home we discuss alternatives to cost effectively meet this allowance and maintain your building goals.
